**Description:**

Client queries that trigger serving stale data and that also require lookups in local authoritative zone data may result in an assertion failure.

**Impact:**

A `named` instance vulnerable to this logic error may terminate unexpectedly.

**Workarounds:**

Disabling serve-stale answers mitigates this issue.

We are not aware of any active exploits.

**Solution:**

Upgrade to the patched release most closely related to your current version of BIND 9:

- 9.18.28
- 9.20.0
